The first stage of the fall rut for the bull elk is the shedding of the velvet off of the antlers. This was taken
on the first morning of a mid-august trip to Yellowstone National Park. This elk returned to this location later that
evening with one side scraped off. By the next morning the elk had rubbed both sides clean. The male bull elk
tend to get skiddish and scarce as they become a bit vulnerable during this stage.
